The Misfortune of Kyon and Koizumi (Kyon& Koizumi no Sainan, キョン&古泉の 災難) is a collection Boisterous, impulsive Haruhi Suzumiya commands the spotlight. They all had to play dressup as public relations for the Brigade, but the boys' outfits were more humiliating. She made the SOS Brigade test a "test batch". Although Kyon is superficially attracted to Haruhi, this kiss is actually a Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya get under way, Kyon awakens on.
One, is she really God as Koizumi suggested early in the story? She seems mortal enough and it's implied she didn't always have her powers. However, is that really a meaningful question considering her implied omnipotence?
Even the characters in-story don't know. Often has these moments with Kyon or Mikuru. Has a subtle but serious one when Kyon accidentally travels a few years into the future in Surprise; the now college-age Haruhi smiles at him in a way the current Haruhi never has, making him "dizzy". The moment is interrupted by future-Kyon calling out to her. Haruhi's a Jerk with a Heart of GoldKyon's a Tsundere who wouldn't dare beat up the universe's equivalent of a deity.
An upskirt directed at Mikuru, be it ever so accidental, has set her off at least once. Also, when she sets a specific time for you to show up for one of her club's events, she absolutely expects you to be on time, even if she sets a ridiculous time limit of 30 seconds. Though not seen on-screen, the quantity of food she consumes impresses Itsuki. She even develops a tactic for hitting the cafeteria: She makes it very clear right from the start that she doesn't care about the gender of the one she is with, as long as he or she is not an ordinary human being.
She doesn't seem to have been dating girls though, but perhaps that was simply because only guys confessed to her. With molestation rather than outright rape. The plot literally revolves around her, but because of her Selective Obliviousness she never really seems to figure this out. Considering one of the possible scenarios should she ever find out about her powersthis is probably for the best. It can also be theorized that the universe essentially bending over for her is what caused her screwed up personality in the first place.
Blank Face of Shame: This happens to Haruhi when she leaves after witnessing Kyon saving Mikuru's pictures. Also annoyingly subverted because she immediately walks into Mikuru, who can see her face and quickly reacts.
Good grades, brown hair.

Haruhi is very attractive and athletic, gets excellent grades, a superb cook and is generally good at everything except normal human social interaction, an area in which she seems horrendously lacking — she knows about it, but doesn't see the point.
She's also utterly frustrated and unsatisfied with her life. She gets better in later books after character development, with Kyon even noting how she has become more sociable to their classmates in general, not just the SOS Brigade. One that manifests her disillusionment at the world through cheery obnoxious behavior. She appears to be one when Kyon first sees her in the alternate world in the Disappearance film. While she seems normal, you can clearly tell she's not very happy with life.
Until about halfway through, she was definitely this character type. She constantly bullies Mikuru for her own amusement and and for fanservice. Despite being an unstable Cloudcuckoolandershe is fantastic at almost everything, and people acknowledge it.
She really shows her class, when it comes to things that have nothing to do with the SOS Brigade activities, as Kyon points out in the first chapter of Vol. And she actually does wear bunny ears! But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Since Haruhi is usually a Shameless Fanservice Girlit's significant when she starts kicking Kyon out of the club room when she changes. Also, when they get drenched by the rain and have to duck inside a cave for shelter in "Remote Island Syndrome", she and Kyon are both shown taking off their shirts and shorts to wring them out.
Haruhi also begins to do this with her bra, but stops before unfastening it. Even though she and Kyon are separated by a rock wall and he can't even see her. During "Snow Mountain Syndrome," Kyon is surprised that she noticed he's been paying more attention to Yuki. Not really an example of one on the basis of her behavior; the most she's ever done is get annoyed and frustrated when Kyon pays too much attention to Mikuru.
This is especially evident in the ninth volume where after being introduced to Sasaki, aka that weird girl Kunikida have been talking about, she started an outbreak of Closed Spaces. In Snowy Mountain Syndrome, she goes after Kyon for paying too much attention to Yuki, and she won't let his own sister stay with him. During the baseball game in the anime, this trope is used subtly.
After changing into cheerleader outfits, Haruhi holds Mikuru's hair in a ponytail style and wonders if she would look cuter this way. Then she quickly glances at Kyon, and remembers that he has a ponytail fetish at least that's what he told hergroans a little, then decides against the idea. In the episode "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya III", she gets rather annoyed when Kyon gets picked to go with Mikuru during the toothpick drawing, and angrily tells him they'd better not act as if on a date.
Later on, she has a very disgusted look on her face when Kyon and Nagato get chosen to go searching for stuff together. A few episodes later, it's implied that Haruhi will sometimes go to extreme measures, even Closed Space, if that's what it takes to cockblock Kyon and Mikuru. Kyon lists off the "Haruhi Eccentricities Numbers 1, 2 and 3" in the first episode. One of these is a different hair style every day because she has to express the color of each day in its own way Club President: Every attempt to compliment her fails and she can't stand criticism so she winds up in the arms of the Silent Snarker.
Not your typical Otakubut the girl loves her costumes. And her anime Shout Outs. Unfortunately her bumbling henchman Kyon can't figure out how to get hamsters. Gets one at the hands of Kuyo near the end of Surprise Vol. In the anime rendition of the incident where Kyon almost beats her for going WAY too far in her mistreatment of Mikuru, she ultimately stops arguing and almost start to cry. Despite her being the title character and the person the story revolves around, Kyon, at volume 4 onwards, is clearly The Hero and he is only the Supporting Protagonist in the sense that the reasons for some of the strange stuff that happens is because of her emotional state.
A near-victim of this during the climax of Surprise Vol. Happens in two stages And we see a compressed version of it again in Disappearance. She starts off as a traditional Ice Queendefrosts into a Jerkass and gets nicer from there.
In Kyon's own words: Sheh wants to find something that would make her unique. Gets a detention early on following the Playboy Bunny incident not for dressing as a Playboy Bunny in the first place, as she later dons the exact same outfit without interference, but for deliberately traumatizing Mikuru in the process; it didn't help that Mikuru was a second-year at the time, while Haruhi was a first-year.
For a girl as smart and generally talented as she is, Haruhi is capable of being incredibly dense at times. She doesn't know how to apologize or thank anyone. However, at one point, Kyon tells her that her the one time he saw her in a ponytail it was "so cute it was criminal," and from then on whenever she really screws up, she puts her hair in a ponytail in the next scene, since it's the only way she can apologize. She doesn't know how to accept gratitude either.
After the concert in "Live A Live", she is thanked quite nicely by the band she helped out, and, though she handles it well in person, later feels disturbed and antsy for no reason she can think of. Kyon believes it's because the antics she usually gets up to are not the sort of things people would thank her for. Done with her Kouyouen uniform in Disappearance. What the other three members of the SOS brigade fear would happen should something drastic happen, particularly to Kyon. Even the Girls Want Her: May have occurred in "Snowy Mountain Syndrome", when the Brigade members are confronted with hallucinatory versions of the people that they fantasize about the most, Haruhi is revealed to be Mikuru's fantasy.
Then again, which hallucination appears to which Brigade member is actually a formula worked out by Nagato to provide a clue to help them escape.
The Misfortune of Kyon & Koizumi
Koizumi sees Kyonand admits to being rather disturbed by the double's behavior. Sasaki has some Les Yay towards her as well. Emits a creepy-sounding chuckle in "Snowy Mountain Syndrome" after learning how her rebellious spirit blindly shuns the mainstream in favor of the obscure. She also delivers a menacing laugh in "The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina" as she reveals she may have a lead on what Kyon and Mikuru were up to in that story.
Of the SOS Brigade and always out to promote it. Kyon notes that she 'knows how to get answers' peacefully from the apartment keeper during the investigation of Asakura's disaperance. She knows how to be social and charming, but she doesn't know why anyone would do so. Even after Character Developmentshe retains her belief that courtesy is for the boring. She can deliver a flying kick to the head to the Chew Toybut she can't be called on to help with the fights that are being kept from her because Feminine Women Can Cook: Suprisingly a good cook as Kyon remarks her food at times, despite her being a tomboy.
With Kyon, though it's not his real first name It's more a Japanese cultural thing; it's perfectly normal for teenage Japanese girls to refer to one another by their given names but to boys by their surnames. More of note is the fact that, whereas she uses affectionate honorifics for the other Brigade members 'Mikuru-chan', 'Yuki-chan', 'Koizumi-kun'which indicates some degree of closeness but is still fairly unremarkable given Haruhi's Genki Girl personality, she refers to Kyon with no honorific whatsoever, which, particularly for a girl, indicates a remarkable degree of intimacy, similar to the traditional First-Name Basis in English.
She's also a foil to Mikuru in at least two ways. And don't forget Yuki, who unlike Haruhi, is cool and silent. Can also foil Itsuki, who is wise and calm, while she's more impulsive and reckless. And Ryoko is the true evil psychopath while Haruhi is a heroic normal girl deep down. Kyon is her first friend since elementary school according to Taniguchi. The other brigade members warm up to her eventually, but Kyon is still the only one who wasn't ordered by a superior.
In her case, it's by choice, since she isn't interested in ordinary humans. The change after she makes a friend is pretty impressive.
Even after the Brigade start to know her on a personal level, Kyon is the only one of them who trusts her on a personal level. Friend to All Children: She appears to love kids and enjoys playing with them, as evidenced by her antics during Endless Eight.
She is clearly fond of Kyon's little sister, who likes her back in return. In the novels, it's revealed that she tutors an elementary school boy who just happens to be the future inventor of time travel.
Very evident in the opening credits of Season 1, and during her cameo in Lucky Star. Kyon felt there was something unusual about her, but when he told Koizumi this, he said that he felt no worry. Haruhi specifically mentioned that Kyon had worked on it, but Yasumi insulted its crudity. Kyon, feeling suspicious, invited Koizumi outside to "play catch", but this was really an excuse to discuss Yasumi without Haruhi overhearing.
Koizumi said that Yasumi was probably there because Haruhi desired a new club member, and furthermore, he believed that Asahina knew nothing about her. While they tossed balls at each other, Yasumi threw them a paper airplane. It had a message written on it: Upon returning, Kyon noted she had greatly altered the website, but Yasumi had left early.
- Haruhi Suzumiya
She had apologized repeatedly to Haruhi, saying something had come up. However, when Kyon made it home, Yasumi was waiting in his room for him. She said she just wanted to visit him but made confusing statements, such as not being able to keep pets anymore and wanting to see some in friends' houses. She noted Shamisen 's intelligence. She left quickly, saying "let's meet again" and asking him not to hate her.
Asahina revealed that Yasumi had left a strange flower from the mountain near Tsuruya 's place at the clubroom. Kyon was worried, as a previous note delivered to him in this way nearly resulted in his death at the hands of Ryoko Asakuraso he first tried to find Yasumi, and upon failing to find her he went to Nagato for assistance.
Nagato told him she was nothing, but there was no student by that name at the school. Nagato also said she was "different" from an alien, time traveler, esper or slider. Nagato couldn't reveal if Yasumi was normal "at that moment" but said the meeting would likely have a positive outcome, and that Yasumi could assist him in some matter. Meanwhile, Yasumi met Haruhi and told her she had to skip class going to the clubroom that day. At the clubroom after school, Koizumi arrived late and noticed the flower that Yasumi had brought.
He took pictures of it and sent it to sources, who informed him it was an orchid. Kyon had to embarrassingly excuse himself to avoid Haruhi and return to the clubroom. He found Yasumi there, and she looked happy. She said she didn't know what would happen when someone knocked at the door. Another Kyon walked in, and Yasumi got them to clasp hands and combine into one. She called him "sempai", but noted she'd made a mistake.
She said they would meet again before vanishing. Tachibana admitted them to the school, which was under Sasaki's closed space. Upon entering the clubroom, they discovered another Kyon along with Yasumi. She got the Kyon's to clasp hands and combine into one. They combined into one Koizumi as well.
Combined Timeline A disembodied voice Yasumi's explained what happened to Kyon. Meanwhile, the school appeared to be within Haruhi's closed space as well as Sasaki's. Kuyou used her powers to summon Haruhi to threaten her and so force Kyon to move Haruhi's powers. When negotiations proved fruitless, Kyon jumped out of a window to catch Haruhi. Both looked like they would fall to the courtyard and die from the fall.
However, they were caught by the hand of a celestial. The celestial started attacking the clubroom when time slowed down Kyon noticed Yasumi standing on the roof of the school. Kyon and Haruhi were taken away to separate times and places. Haruhi was simply returned home. Kyon appeared a month later in Haruhi's bedroom, requiring Asahina to return him to his proper time. Afterward, Koizumi opined that Yasumi was a portion of Haruhi's subconscious.
While Haruhi didn't know about her own powers and was insensate during the aggressive negotiations, Yasumi had a much better idea of what was going on, and deliberately ended Sasaki's closed space.
Both closed spaces crumbled when Kyon and Haruhi were taken away. Koizumi explained Yasumi's name an anagram of Haruhi Suzumiya to Kyon. By the next Monday Yasumi had contacted Haruhi and let her know she had to quit, as she wasn't really a North High student. Yasumi claimed to be a middle school student who had acquired a North High uniform.
Observation Nagato and Koizumi both denied that there was anything unusual about her; Koizumi admitted she might be a little unusual but that it amounted to nothing, and she wasn't a threat to the Brigade.
Watahashi requested her name be spelled in a certain way to make her name's meaning more obviouswears a hairpin with an emblem of a faint smile at the end of The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya, Haruhi comments on Yasumi's hair accessory and mentions that she wore something similar herself in elementary schooland wore a North High uniform which appeared to be too large for her. She is described by Kyon as a girl that was moe in a different manner than Mikuru Asahina.
Yasumi demonstrated great intellect, such as immediately finding and opening the sealed "Mikuru" folder on the Brigade computer. While doing so, she hummed a tune that Haruhi had learned during Live A Live. Yasumi She soon displays the ability to create separate timelines as she had intervened in Kyon's phone call to Sasaki in order to prevent a meeting with her companionsand eventually merge them in order to help Kyon out of the crisis they cause.
She also has the ability to create Closed Spaces and Celestials. She is eventually revealed to be a part of Haruhi's subconscious that had noticed that the SOS Brigade was in trouble and thus appeared to help them.
She eventually vanishes once the crisis is solved, with Haruhi attesting that she appeared at her door admitting that she was a middle school student who had snuck into the SOS Brigade.
Powers Haruhi at North High Haruhi has the ability to create reality or "data"but the power is unconscious and she is unaware of it. Just by thinking, she can alter reality. Sometimes this manifests as the ability to make something of her desires truly exist, such as closing off a remote island with fog to enhance the atmosphere of a murder mystery.
When she is overjoyed, her abilities have changed the weather, made animals speak and even changed the orbit of the Earth. Many of her powers are implied in the series and not stated outright.
In The Melancholy novel, class president Ryoko Asakura secretly a humanoid interface changed the class seating patterns numerous times, but in every instance, Kyon ended up sitting in front of Haruhi. Kyon couldn't understand why he felt the need to attend the SOS Brigade's early meetings.
In the first case, Nagato was able to reverse Haruhi's alteration of reality. In Endless EightHaruhi's powers created a time loop, which she herself never noticed, nor did most humans, but Kyon, Koizumi, and Asahina often did. Nagato was fully aware of the time loop due to her humanoid interface nature.
Closed Space Main Article: Koizumi said he would treasure the memory forever, annoying Kyon even more. He awoke with Koizumi too close to his face. Koizumi warned him he was in closed spaceand he'd arrived there because "someone" had knocked him unconscious and taken him there. When Kyon asked why Koizumi had abducted him, Koizumi said he had wanted to play a game alone with Kyon a request Kyon had previously refused.
The ensuing argument was interrupted by a celestial, which easily defeated Koizumi. After leaving the space, Kyon resolved to just play board games with Koizumi. When Kyon told Koizumi about this, he became really enthusiastic about making Kyon "handsome".
They proposed making Kyon less "boring" to entertain Haruhi. When Kyon told her he would turn into an "ideal man", she took it as a bad joke and dragged him out of the room. Koizumi had to run off due to the closed space that had been generated. Previously Haruhi had complained about Kyon's attitude, wishing he was more like Koizumi, and now they'd both gotten their wish. At the clubroom, each tried to hide what had happened to them, but Haruhi got suspicious, thinking they were mimicking each other.
They were to dig up on school grounds, as Haruhi had heard there was treasure buried there. While Kyon and Koizumi dug, Kyon came to believe there was no treasure. Meanwhile Yuki Nagato found a time capsule, which Haruhi accepted as treasure. Okabe if he didn't accept the Brigade they would put it back, which Kyon considered coercion. Since the boys lost, they were subject to punishment.

Koizumi's writing style was fast and noisy, so he had to memorize what teachers said during class rather than take notes. Kyon made Koizumi practice, but the handwriting had to be censored in part because it contained Kyon's real name. Koizumi showed his own name but it was still messy. He had to write it a lot because girls kept asking him for autographs.
His English signature was very legible though. Koizumi ended up taking his notes in English, making him even more popular with the girls. Koizumi believed she was about to destroy the world with closed space. They both dressed up in weird costumes and played the game, but closed space appeared anyway. Koizumi briefly suggested he and Kyon dress up as maids, but Nagato proposed a solution: Haruhi made herself the director of the game, which ended up making Kyon very uncomfortable.
Kyon bickered with Koizumi due to their uncomfortable positions, ignoring Haruhi in the process.
