InsurgentI had pretty high expectations. Unsurprisingly, I really enjoy the Insurgent movie.
Just like with the novel, Tris, Four, and their growing relationship remain my favorite aspects. Tris is so haunted, feeling extremely guilty about losing her parents and Will. Shailene Woodley is spectacular at bringing those heightened emotions to the screen and really taking the viewers on a bitterly emotional and physical journey.
Interestingly, I expect more conflict between Tris and Four, especially about whether or not Evelyn can be trusted. As with any book-to-film adaptation, the Insurgent movie has several noticeable changes from the novel.
Production believed that adding this would condense and clarify several scenes in book. At the beginning of the film, Jeanine Kate Winslet quickly reminds us of the threats Tris and Divergents are facing—however, the fact that she wants to uncover the message in the box unlike in the book where she wants to keep the Edith Prior message hidden is odd.
Did she tell you very much about where the story was going, or was it just little hints? She did tell me because I really interrogated her, because I needed to know as a director where everybody was going just because I felt like I was setting up a trilogy. If a character is going to end up one way, you start them a certain way.

So I felt like I needed to know all of that, so I was just pumping her for information, not to mention information about the history of the world and what discoveries were gonna be made about the overall world. What was outside the fence and that kind of thing.
Were there any serious discussions about you coming back or was the timetable always impossible? Yes, at first I was actually onboard to direct it.
I was editing Divergent, I was prepping to shoot more scenes for Divergent, and then I was gonna be prepping a movie on top of that. It was a hard decision. The cast is incredible. You clearly built a great foundation for the rest of the franchise.
