I was expecting something a little more shocking as I heard this book was considered scandalous at the turn of the last century. I can be quite the contrarian myself.

He describes his new appreciation for life as a process or rebirth. He has a reputation for being disaffected with society, and this reputation attracts Michel. Thus, by mirroring his protagonist’s psychic state with images from the natural world around him, Gide marks Michel’s existential journey indelibly for the reader with each page turned and each layer of being uncovered.

The self-justifying world that Michel now inhabits centres on the ruthless search for ‘authenticity’, which means that all the elements of his previous life – his wife included – must be cast aside.
